So the foreign cruiser has a tough choice: how long do you want to spend in Australia and what can you do and see? In a classic round-the-world voyage, cruisers sail from the South Pacific Islands to New Zealand during cyclone season: a difficult transition, but with rich rewards in New Zealand’s hospitality and ship facilities.

From New Zealand, many return north to Vanuatu or New Caledonia and then to the Indian Ocean. For those who will logically make a short pit stop in Australia in Cairns, Tuesday Island or Darwin. Australia is a big country, don’t underestimate the distances you will have to travel. Bundaberg to Sydney is just under 500 miles; add 628 miles to travel from Sydney to Hobart. If you go from Hobart to Perth across the bay, you’ll add another 2,250 miles.

There is also a less used sailing route around southern Australia and up the west coast. By carefully studying the weather conditions, we saw that a difficult passage of the Great Australian Coast to the west is possible in the summer months of February and March.
A sequence of high pressure systems will remove prevailing southwesterly winds and create pleasant easterly winds for four to seven days. Cruising across Australia not only gives you the chance to visit Tasmania’s lesser-known sailing areas on the wild west coast, but also makes cities like Adelaide accessible.

Cities such as Perth and Fremantle offer all possible yachting facilities, and from the west coast of Australia there are two options: start crossing the Indian Ocean as soon as possible after the cyclone season or sail north to Indonesia .
In the Australian cruising dictionary, “cruising” does not mean blue water cruising, but primarily a day’s coastal cruise from port to anchorage. As such, Australian coastal cruising offers many interesting options that foreign travelers often perceive as luxuries, such as internet streaming up to 25 miles offshore and ample provision (a supermarket and ATM on every corner).
We used to joke that sailing on the east coast was “watch the sail” as many of the estuaries are sandbar estuaries that require careful calculation to get past the bar on the turn of the tide. The challenges of sailing can be roughly described in three words: current, shores and sea breeze.
First the current. Along the east coast of Australia there is a southerly current of up to four knots, which makes for quick sailing south, but quite tedious work sailing north unless you use the opposite current close to the coast. Along the southern coast, the Levin Current flows eastward at 0.5 knots. On the west coast, the Levin Current is stronger and flows south at about one knot.
When Will Cruises Resume In 2021?
The second challenge is depression. They flow in a continuous sequence from west to east, bringing troughs and fronts. The quality of the available forecasts is high, so you can make good use of the wind created by the troughs to point you in the right direction. Sailing against prevailing winds creates difficult conditions, as steep wind waves form very quickly in shallow coastal areas.
Australia’s hot interior creates a sea breeze. Again, if you learn them and use them to your advantage, some nice passages can be made. But you have to be careful. Sea breezes can easily last 12 hours and reach over 25 knots in addition to prevailing winds.
The sailing season in South Australia is best in January, February and March. This means you can sail to Australia from, for example, New Caledonia in September. This gives you time to cruise freely along the coast and make some land trips. We went to Ayers Rock/Uluru.
You can spend the summer in Tasmania and sail back in March to catch the end of the cyclone season by the time you get back to Queensland. If you decide to go along the gulf, you should leave Tasmania in late January to plan your gulf crossing in February or March.

Australia has a reputation as a difficult country to enter. In fact, if you prepare yourself and your boat, there is nothing to worry about. The process is quite simple and all the necessary information is easily available on government websites.
Each crew member must have a visa before arriving in Australia. There are two types. Electronic visitor visa valid for three months. It is free and can be extended. The other type is valid for one year (multiple entry) and costs AUD$140. Both can be submitted online.

There are two important steps for your boat. First, the navigation permit. It is issued upon arrival and is valid for one year with the possibility of extension up to three years. With this sailing license as proof that the yacht is ‘in transit’, purchases of boat parts or repairs are exempt from sales tax (GST in Australia).
The second step is a biosecurity check. Fresh fruits, meat, dairy products and eggs are prohibited. Importantly, the boat should also be free of pests such as fruit
