BEIJING/SYDNEY, June 15 () – China Southern Airlines Co Ltd ( 600029.SS ) conducted test flights this week with Boeing Co’s ( BA.N ) 737 MAX planes for the first time since March, flight tracking websites showed, in sign A jet boom in China may be imminent as demand picks up again.

The MAX jet registered as B-1127 took off from the airline’s headquarters in the city of Guangzhou on Tuesday morning and touched down about two hours later in the city of Nanyang in central China, according to flight data provider Variflight. He returned to Guangzhou in the evening.

The MAX flights this week come amid growing demand for travel in China as the airline industry begins to emerge from a two-month shutdown in the financial center of Shanghai due to the COVID-19 outbreak – albeit a small one by global standards.
The latest data from China Southern showed that demand, measured in revenue passenger kilometers (RPK) fell 69% in May from the same month a year earlier but was narrower than the 80% drop in April.
Data from travel company OAG showed that Chinese airlines increased their capacity by 8% this week compared to last week.
China’s aviation regulator lifted the grounding order late last year, after more than two and a half years, but said the planes would need to be repaired and pilots would need additional training before the jets could be returned to service.

The move has wider implications for tourism in the Asia-Pacific region, where outbound Chinese travelers often play an outlying role, even as other countries are slow to open borders due to low vaccination rates and rising cases of COVID-19 .

An expectation of a delayed recovery in international travel has partly led some analysts to lower earnings forecasts for the next few years. China Merchants Securities, for example, has cut its revenue forecasts for Air China (601111.SS) to -9 billion, 2.7 billion, and 6.7 billion yuan in 2021, 2022, 2023.

Air China executives have told analysts that the recovery in travel from China will be slower than that in the US and Europe, adding that many developing countries have yet to experience high vaccination rates.
China Airlines did not take media calls on the results, but two analysts reported what was said, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to comment beyond the points to customers. Neither Air China nor CAAC responded to a request for comment.
The CAAC restricted international flights in March 2020 to reduce concerns about the rise of coronavirus infections. The so-called “Five One” policy allows international carriers to fly one flight per week on one route to any country and foreign airlines to operate one flight per week to China.

Passenger services will also be organized on the Tokyo (Narita), Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka routes as well, with the frequency of the service to Seoul in South Korea increasing to daily flights from August onwards.
Overall, Q3 will see the number of passenger flights increase by 40% with 150 passenger services per week, maintaining the pace of recovery in travel demand.
On the Southeast Asia routes, a weekly Kaohsiung-Manila service was introduced in June to serve passengers from southern Taiwan.
In August, the following changes will be made to the Southeast Asia routes from Taoyuan: services to Bangkok (Thailand) will be increased to 14 flights per week; services to Manila (Philippines), Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) and Hanoi (Vietnam) are increased to 10 trips per week; services to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) will be increased to four flights a week; services to Penang (Malaysia) will be increased to two trips per week; services to Singapore and Phnom Penh (Cambodia) will be increased to three times a week; and services to Yangon (Myanmar) will be increased to two flights a week.

China Airlines’ Hong Kong route will also be increased to seven services a week with daily flights from July and will be increased again in August to 10 flights a week.
Cross routes such as Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai (Pudong) and Xiamen are always active. From August, services to Beijing and Chengdu will be increased to two flights per week, while the Taoyuan-Shanghai (Pudong) route will increase to nine flights per week.
China Airlines’ long-haul routes from North America to Los Angeles, Ontario, San Francisco and New York (USA) as well as Vancouver (Canada) are fully booked.
Services to Ontario will be expanded to two flights a week in August. Flights to Los Angeles will increase to five a week; The Taiwan and Los Angeles (California) route will now include daily flights. The San Francisco service will be increased to five flights per week while Vancouver will be increased to three per week.

On European routes, services to Frankfurt (Germany) will be increased to four flights per week; services to Amsterdam (Netherlands) will be increased to three flights a week; and services to London (UK) will be increased to two flights per week.
The Oceanic portfolio includes Australia and New Zealand. On Australian routes, Sydney and Melbourne will increase to two flights per week, while Brisbane will have one passenger flight per week. Direct flights to Auckland (New Zealand) will be increased to one flight every two weeks.
China’s A321neo passenger aircraft is currently in use across the network and four additional aircraft will enter service this year.
