They both moved to Airlie at single ages and attended the same local primary school at slightly different times and lived on the same streets when they first met as teenagers. Through many vicissitudes of life, they get married and together they have 5 children and 5 grandchildren.
Although a name unique to Australia, the Chengody (Sengody in Hungarian) family has contributed to the Whitsunday community in many ways for over 40 years through arts, sport, music, tourism, schools, business, development, youth and the yachting fraternity.

In 2000, Peter was chosen to carry the Whitsunday Shire Olympic Torch and carry the evening’s Olympic cauldron at a reception at our local sports ground in recognition of his contribution as an athlete and to the development of public sports facilities – the only one in Cathy Freeman at the opening of the Olympic Games. 100 people across Australia will be honored by lighting the cauldron during the culminating evening. He was also awarded the Australian Sports Medal created by the Howard government and Governor-General William Dean.
Peter Whitsunday also spent 9 years as Honorary Treasurer of the PCYC where he was a founding committee member for 10 years and was previously a member of the Blue Light Youth Dance Committee.
Peter Whitsunday chaired the Sportspark for 7 years during its initial construction phase, transforming it from a local waste dump into a children’s playground. Former Chairman of the Whitsunday Regional Open Space Recreation Advisory Committee as well as a committee member of the Whitsunday Chamber of Commerce and founder president of the Whitsunday Junior Rugby Union and founder president of the Whitsunday Tens Tournament.
Peter is a life member of the Whitsunday Rugby Union, Whitsunday Sportspark and Whitsunday PCYC. Although easily distracted by any sport, Peter has a particular passion for rugby union, having represented Mackay, North Culled, Culled Country, QLD ‘B’ and the Australian U21 training squad in several international matches and overseas tours – all while based in Airlie Beach . . He plays for a local club and still enjoys touch football.

Selena found time to raise children, manage the family business and run a dental clinic with a high work ethic, where she worked for 10 years to establish strong contacts with local people and develop her multi-skills, which she used effectively. Managing holiday units including online bookings, accounting, social media and marketing in her cheerful and smiling way.
Selena is a motivated and active person who likes to go to the gym, relax on the boardwalk and bask in her grandchildren.
The family business has always been a member of Tourism Whitsundays since the 1970s, with Judy as treasurer during the reform years of the 1970s. Other state and national industry benchmarks have also been supported throughout most of the business’s history.
Since its inception the holiday unit business has faced constant change due to customer demand and in 2005/6 underwent a major refurbishment of the holiday units which over the years have provided pleasantly surprising comfortable units in unsurpassed condition. “In the old days the demand was for black and white TVs with double beds, whereas now it’s at least a big bed and a flat screen in a fresh environment – which is what we offer today.”

Despite the rise of the backpacker era and more, the business has remained value for money in the middle of the road vacation unit space without failing to provide central investment for qualified customers and thus remain operationally consistent.
Peter and Selena are always looking for green initiatives to add to their holiday units and are interested in the continued development of Airlie Beach in terms of its natural and beautiful surroundings – “We have all lived in Airlie for years and have met. There are so many wonderful people in the world.”
