Ashfield Public School’s public speaking competition aims to improve all children’s oral communication. The idea is for kids to learn more about public speaking skills and how to engage an audience.
Ashfield Public School’s all-school public speaking competition is held annually in the second term. There are two divisions:
The competition begins in the classroom, where each student gives a speech according to the requirements of the specific division in which they are located. Children will only compete against other students in their class and division.
Two children per class, from a specific division and year, will then be selected to qualify for our school finals.

Students who compete in Division Two have the opportunity to qualify to represent our school in a multicultural public speaking competition.
For the speech prepared in the first division (K-6), each student chooses a topic of interest. Pupils use visual stimuli, such as toys or photographs, during their presentations. A visual stimulus acts as an impulse to engage the audience.
This speech structure will be explicitly taught to students during class. Teachers help students choose topics and develop speaking skills. It is important that students understand that the competition is about public speaking and not about reading from a palm card or screen.
An example of a speech in Division One might be a speech at Castle or Netball. Students are allowed to speak for 30 seconds and are guided through a series of photographs (without written text) presented through power points and/or props.

The time limit for prepared speeches in Division One can be from 20 seconds to 2 minutes depending on the child’s ability and confidence.
The aim of the public speaking competition is to develop children’s self-confidence and ability to speak in front of an audience using eye contact, appropriate volume and expression and gestures.
Some children may choose to give their speech in a language other than English. An adult who knows English and the language will help the teacher to assess the speech.
Remember that there are no written texts in Division 1 and children are explicitly taught how to speak in the classroom using visuals such as photographs and maps.

Students use palm cards to give impromptu speeches on topics that will be common non-multicultural topics. Topics for the day are chosen by the teacher/judge and students will have 5 minutes to write their impromptu speech.
Note that students are expected to finish at or just after the last ring and this would be considered a poor time to achieve continuous ringing.
Students use facial (smile, attention, etc.) and arm/hand movements effectively when appropriate. Students also stand up straight and appear confident and comfortable while speaking.
The speech attracts the attention of the listeners using effective eye contact and means (photos, toys, etc…). Students also speak in an expressive, articulate and audible manner. Please note that only students in Division Two can use palm cards.

The Flying Academy, located on Ladybrook Estate, was named the best school in the county for progression and is also up to 11th nationally, out of a total of 20,840 schools.
“We are delighted with this result,” said director Tony Warsop. “Staff and students work very hard and can be very proud of their achievements.

KS2 is the term for four years of schooling for children between the ages of 7 and 11. The latest league tables also show that the Flying High Trust, which runs the school, is the best performing multi-academic trust in the county and fourth in the country. .
