Baxter Child Care Centre – Save Sir Philip Baxter Child Care Center launched this petition to Mayor Peter Cavanagh (Mayor of Woollahra Council) and nine others.
Sir Philip Baxter Woollahra Childcare Center has provided exceptional long-term services for children in the Woollahra and Waverley Council communities for almost 40 years. Located in a heritage listed building in the residential heart of Woollahra, it provides a caring learning environment for children aged 0-6, many of whom attend the local Woollahra Public School where the center maintains a unique relationship.
Baxter Child Care Centre
In June 2018, the center’s owner, the Compassionate Society, unexpectedly announced that the center would be closed at the end of the year and the premises put up for sale. This gives parents only six months to find alternative services in areas where quality childcare is lacking, as well as separating many siblings and friends at the center who don’t plan to move until elementary school starts. This unrealistic deadline not only affects children’s health, but also puts parents and grandparents under emotional and financial stress as they try to provide options for their families.

Benevolent Society CEO Joe Toohey assured parents that the decision was not about money but was made without any consultation with parents or staff and the sale was to the highest bidder, meaning there was no incentive for the site to be kept as a childcare center. If the site becomes just another apartment building, the area will lose a beloved community service that has a long and valuable history in our community.
We call on Woollahra and Waverley Councils, whose residents are most affected, and the NSW Government to challenge this decision and ensure that the facility is retained as a quality childcare center by the Benevolent Society or future owners. Sign this petition to stop the loss of essential services to children in our community.

Ballard Property’s Sam Towndraw said the terrace was sold empty but could be repurposed as a childcare centre.
The heritage-listed property called Larissa was built in the late 1800s in the Victorian Regency style and sits on 950sqm of land.
The property is being sold as a 7 bedroom, 4 bathroom, four car garage. There is also an R3 zoning that allows commercial use.
Although no price guide was disclosed, Mr. Towndraw said initial feedback from buyers was $9 million-$10 million.

Families with children at Sir Philip Baxter Childcare were told in June that the center would close at the end of the year.
The news came as a shock as community members launched a petition to save the center in July but the benevolent society decided to close the center in December.
