The Cook Islands have a pleasant warm and sunny climate throughout the year. The driest months are April to November with an average temperature of 26°C. November to March is the warm season, with a slight increase in humidity and occasional rainfall. The temperature ranges between 22°C and 30°C. April, May, September and October are good times to visit as the weather is warm and the skies are clear.

Rarotonga International Airport (RAR) Opens an external website in a new window. It is the main international gateway to the Cook Islands, located in the town and county of Awarua, Rarotonga, 3 kilometers west of the downtown area.
Staff at Rarotonga Airport will greet you upon landing and assist you with your travel needs. After you collect your bags from the arrival area, various transport options are available to take you on your way.
Getting to Rarotonga is easy with a range of transport options to suit your needs. Choose from buses, taxis, ride-sharing, buses, scooters or rental cars. Chef Buses operates a public bus service around the island that passes through the airport every 30 minutes. Cook Island Tours and Raro Tours offer meet and greet services and hotel bus transfers to all international flights. It is best to book your transfer well in advance of your stay. There is a taxi stand next to the arrival area or you can rent a car or scooter. Car rental operators have an office in the arrivals area and an island car and bike rental depot opposite the airport car park exit.
Getting around the Cook Islands is easy. There is only one main road that goes around the whole of Rarotonga with no traffic lights and two roundabouts. If you rent a car or moped, you drive on the left side of the road. When riding a motorcycle in Rarotonga, you must wear a safety helmet. Getting around the island is easy using public transport. There are two buses that run around the island of Rarotonga. clockwise and counterclockwise. Buses stop anywhere along the main road, all you have to do is smile and wave at them. Cycling around the islands is easy as the main roads are flat. Many hotels have bicycles to borrow or you can rent a bicycle or electric bike. You can also arrange a taxi, transfer or join a tour.

Cook Islands Travel Guide
+ Meals, beverages, entertainment and shows vary between flights and cabins. Alcoholic beverages are served during scheduled flight times on select flights. Since we had a fast and stable internet connection while in Adelaide, Marcel did some research on our next destinations. So far, we’ve booked flights and campers until June, when we’ll be in New Zealand.
While we were “closer”, Marcel had been debating for some time whether to go to Fiji or the Cook Islands. Christian had never heard of the Cook Islands before, but that’s the point of YouTube, right? And this is one of the funniest videos:
After some back and forth, we decided to head to Rarotonga, the largest of the 15 Cook Islands. It is also the main island. As you can see in the photo above, we are 12.06. Auckland to Rarotonga and on that journey we cross the date line. That means we will leave Auckland on the afternoon of June 12th and arrive in Rarotonga on the evening of June 11th. So we arrive before we leave.

Our visa allows us to visit Australia as much as we want, but we cannot stay here for more than 3 consecutive months. On 23.06. It is literally “back to the future” or going back through the date line to Australia. So when we fly back to Australia, the “extra day” is picked up again because we skip June 24th and arrive on June 25th. As there is no direct flight from Rarotonga to Cairns, we stopped in Auckland and Brisbane. In Cairns, we hire a camper again and drive up the East Coast (with the Great Barrier Reef) to Brisbane.

Now, if I were you, I’d start thinking, well, I’ve fished a lot of places around the world, and I’d have to say the big ones are on Andros Island in the Bahamas or around Islamorada, Florida. If we talk about the immense sea, Argentina. A rainbow? Alaska and Russia. You get the idea. But back to this statement. “World’s Largest Bony Fish”. It will make you think and if you are serious about the topic, you will start planning your trip.
Our planning began with an invitation to Mike McClelland, owner of Best of New Zealand Fly Fishing. My wife Kim and I worked with Mike when we were owners of Westbank Anglers. Mike hooked us up with John Peterson, General Manager of Cook Islands Tourism, North America. John and his team did a great job organizing our trip, including arranging our non-stop flights to Rarotonga, the capital of the Cook Islands, and then to/from Aitutaki on Air Rarotonga.
We also put Mike in touch with the best bone hunting guides in Aitutaki led by Ito Davie. Ito’s wife Kalina Davie is in charge of reservations. After exchanging emails, our fishing dates were secured and Kalina assured us that the guides could be flexible with the dates depending on the weather and our other activities.
All together we are going to see 15 little gems of the Cook Islands which cover about 240 square kilometers of the 2.25 million square kilometers.
