A short drive from Hobart is Bruny Island, one of Tasmania’s most popular island destinations outside of the entire island of Tasmania itself. Access to the island is via ferry at Kettering, about 30 minutes’ drive south of Hobart. The ferry runs regularly every half hour and you can see why! The island is a mecca for tourists, surfers, nature lovers, foodies, relaxation seekers and of course locals. Having been to Bruny Island a few times before, we went for two reasons this time; Bruny Island Hideaway and Oysters…lots and lots of oysters.
Once you get off the boat, you’ll pass several unique food and drink destinations. Make sure you get a boat map that shows you where everyone is and you’ll easily find where you want to go… don’t worry, you can’t make too many wrong turns on Bruny. Get Shucked is oyster heaven, what used to be just a trailer with a few logs to sit on is now a large established kitchen, serving lunch as well as fresh oysters.
Breathtaking Cellar Doors To Visit In Tasmania
What we really got to see this time was the Bruny Island Hideaway, an award-winning cabin that celebrates the small life. Hidden deep in the Alonnah Mountains, this cabin is truly paradise. Having seen the house many times via pictures, experiencing this sloping wooden oasis in real life was something else…
EAT: Get Shucked, a must for oyster and seafood lovers. Be careful, this place is popular! So make sure you get there early to find a good spot, but don’t worry, the oysters are always fresh.
DRINK: Bruny isn’t exactly known for its nightlife, but it is home to Australia’s most southerly winery, Bruny Island Wine. Operation of a wine cellar and restaurant, but be sure to check the opening hours and book in advance.
SLEEP: Bruny Island Hideaway, a magical oasis hidden in the bush. If you need to get away from the hectic city life, this is the place for you. Did someone say outdoor bathroom?
