Dr. Ian (Spud) McLeod Murphy was a former physician who came to Emerald in the early 1950s after specializing in the Navy. He soon became a popular friendly GP who most of the older people in the area remember as being the first GP in the Hills. He established the Emerald Medical Center in the old post office, which he painted warship gray.
