Having had a previous high mileage Rodeo 2WD picked up for a song I figured I had some history (and parts left over) that could be used in this next purchase. These are built by Isuzu, not Holden, and can be very reliable with good maintenance.

If people are taking them to the moon and back and still want money for them, they have to be solid. As a Japanese I would imagine they were screwed together with a certain care and precision. I also know that Isuzu builds trucks and I would assume they have some expertise to design a quality utility vehicle that can tow or haul loads all day without fuss. So here we go…that was my basic logic at that point in my life.
I spotted the car online and called straight away but didn’t read it was in Queensland. Living in Melbourne meant checking out was a $400 one-way ticket gamble. Luckily it was perfect and at 13.5km – this single-owner, low-mileage, high-access Isuzu/Holden lovechild was exactly what I was looking for…referring to the justification in the previous paragraph.

It was ridiculously clean, too, and the hood was free of stone chips thanks to a grandpa-spec hood guard. Searching for problems to no avail, I opened the doors to stop the cabin. The interior was sparkling clean and the paperwork was in order – it all looked too good for my savvy little eyes.
I could tell the owner loved his car as he bought a custom fitted carpet cover for the dashboard – he’ll have to keep an eye out at the Autobarn. It has been positioned very carefully with Velcro stickers. These have been strategically placed to keep them perfectly in place to maximize sun protection and prevent rotting of the El Cheapo hard plastic dashboard. In my element!

My previous 3.2-liter V6 managed 9 liters on a country run, and this one was lucky to get 12 liters per 100 kilometers. That’s not to say the rodeo easily kept up. Understanding his limitations meant he gave me plenty of mouth-watering moments as I used all my skills (not to mention hope as a strategy) to keep him going when the going got tough. Being in a less capable machine meant that where others were going over things or going down steep descents, I had to use momentum or apply serious barrel squeezing to follow the same path.
I was able to keep up 99% of the time and didn’t suffer from the apathy of being overwhelmed or being dragged over an obstacle. Even one or the other ambitious rock step was climbed without too much fuss or damage to the plates.
