There are miles of beautiful, sheltered coastline in Hervey Bay, especially between Point Vernon and Orangan’s marina. Currently, the section is dog friendly, a great option for fun days with your pup.
By default, dogs on a lead are allowed on Hervey Bay beaches, except in areas where dogs are allowed. There are also quite a few offshore beaches in Hervey Bay. Some beaches are off-leash all day, while others are off-leash at specific times.
Two of the most popular 24-hour outdoor beaches in Hervey Bay are at Point Vernon Foreshore and Urangan Foreshore.
Melbourne To Cairns Road Trip
There are actually three 24-hour off-leash stretches along Point Vernon Beach. The largest stretches from the end of Spence Street to Ansons Road in Dundoburn, a long stretch of mangroves, sand and mud.
The next stretch of off-leash beach starts 300m west of Gatakers boat ramp at beach marker PTV20 and runs 100m west of the ESA Park playground. There is also a section between Aplin Road and Pines Park.
The 24-hour off-leash beach at Urangan Foreshore is located between Margaret Street and Churchill Street. In addition to the beach, the beach between Urangan Pier and the Aquarium is off-leash between 3pm and 8am, with the frontage from the rock wall south of the harbor to Fulgol Creek.
There are also 24-hour beaches at Burrum Heads and Toogoom, as well as limited season beaches at Burrum Heads, Toogoom, Dundowran Beach and Pialba. For a full list, check out this great map.
Quarterdecks Retreat, Hervey Bay
Aside from the beaches, there aren’t many dog-free options available for visitors with dogs in Hervey Bay. I have listed some of these options…
The boardwalk follows the main access to the beaches in Hervey Bay. And between the freeway and the beaches is the Hervey Bay Esplanade Trail, a nearly 16km footpath and bike path between Gatakers Bay and Urangan Harbour.
Get up and follow a section of the trail with your dog by your side, next to one of the terrain sections or rope sections. Just remember to keep your dog on a leash on the road, and watch out for many riders. I believe the dog is allowed throughout.
Please note that dogs are not allowed to accompany you on the 868 meter long Urangan Pier, or the shorter pier, or the shorter Torquay Pier.
Ways To Stay Comfy In The Great Outdoors
If you want a change of coastal scenery, head to Arcara Lagoons for a trip with a different view of the water.
A small remnant of wetlands is fortunately preserved at Dandworn Beach, a short drive west of central Hervey Bay. There are two routes to choose from: the 600 meter long continental route and the slightly longer 840 meter long lagoon circuit. There are no signs restricting access to dogs, but definitely keep your dog on a leash.
Don’t miss a stop at the lakeside pavilion, looking for lots of turtles in the water below. You will also see eels, fish and lots of birdlife. Afterwards, consider enjoying a coffee at the nearby Arkarra Gardens Cafe.
For a quick change, drive 25 minutes south of Hervey Bay to the historic town of Maryborough. Booming times have left Maryborough, and with it a collection of charming colonial houses. Pick up a personalized itinerary brochure from the Visitor Information Center.
