Meet Joan Delaville: Perth-based hairstylist, trainer and founder of Ebony + Ivory Hair and Beauty; Beauty salon in Perth CBD.
Migrating to Perth from Zambia in 2001, John first set his sights on the exciting world of fashion. The dreams of creative youth are sought to be achieved by enrolling in a design college.
Before starting the first one, however (and, seeing that there was no hope in design), Joan quickly turned to studying business. A decision that made all the difference.
Armed with a solid knowledge of business management and practice, a passion for supporting clients, and a desire to drive business forward, John began his great career.

Here, Joan shares her inspiration for a successful salon, her hopes for the future of the business, and the importance of fostering more inclusive environments for the people at work and clients alike – both at the salon and around the world.

TJ: Tell us about yourself and your work. What first inspired you to follow your passion for hairdressing?
JD: I first noticed the lack of diversity in Australian salons during a trip to Sydney in 2001 when I struggled to find a salon (for my own hair).
With the hairdresser who spent so much time styling my hair, I soon discovered that she had little experience with African hair, [much less training] from an African woman in the community.
At this point, the decision to visit the clinic (and pay $350) means that the service must be excellent. Unfortunately, this hairdresser (along with the other stylists at the salon) didn’t know how to wash my hair.

[Furthermore], he had not received [formal] hairdressing training in Australia and was an international student who was only working to earn money – had no desire to [work] as a hairdresser.
I remember leaving the salon, deciding to change this detail. A few months later, I experienced something similar – or worse. In a salon of five stylists, not one of them knows how to help with my hair. I am so sad – for them and for me.
I knew then, I must do something better. This experience gave me the courage to use my savings to study – and one day to open a salon that would include all clients.
In 2003, I started making braids for customers at home (I learned how to do this from my African elders in Zambia). Then, I moved into a 14 square meter shop in Fremantle – with enough money to study hair.

In 2005, I began my 4 year career, whilst building my salon business and around 2007-8, I moved my salon to a central location on Bark Street in Perth’s CBD.
I have been to the United States several times, to learn more about hair and afro hair textures. I was lucky to be mentored by Kim Campbell (Beyoncé’s hair stylist) and many other amazing American hair experts.
Over the years, I have taught myself as much as I can about all types and textures of hair.
TJ: Tell us about salon life and culture. How important is it to create a fun and welcoming environment for your customers and employees?

JD: The second you walk into our space… you see diversity and inclusion. This is our story, and what Ebony + Ivory makes us! Our place welcomes everyone, and our culture is inclusive. It is very important to be true to who we are.
We are only a small group, and it is important that we all feel at home – because we spend more time in the hospital than at home! This is what we want to think, and it is very important for us to know what our customers think.
All these people reminded me how we are all connected, especially to make the world a better place. We are passionate yet diverse and inclusive – and we know there is more work to be done
JD: As mentioned, our customers are incredibly diverse. We have many different hairstyles from our doorstep. Based on my experience, I have made it a must for all our stylists to suit any hair type.

Although this only means learning how to wash each hair texture. Yes, we work with many women, men, girls and boys with curly and afro hair textures – but our salon is open to everyone!
JD: Outside of hair, we also offer makeup services for every tone. That and headphones are great for listening (lol!). You know what they say…hairy people are good listeners!
TJ: Outside of hijab, we’ve heard that you’re also involved in a number of other initiatives aimed at giving back to the community – from life coaching to volunteer work. Can you tell us more about that?
JD: As a hairdresser and educator, I always believe in giving back and making sure that every space I create is inclusive and diverse.

I use our salon as a force for good by providing free and paid lifestyle coaching to young women from diverse backgrounds. I also give back to the community by giving people updates – including some very inspiring ones.
I lost my father in the early 90s and found a way to navigate life at a young age.
I have used this energy to run my own business while helping others find their purpose and be free. You can’t go down a path like this without learning how to give back.
In 2019, Ebony + Ivory hosted a private screening for 200 children and some of their parents who were part of the Diversity and Inclusion Program.

I believe that when people like to work together, much can be achieved. I’m a big believer in diversity and inclusion – and how it improves our health.
JD: My advice is to be honest with yourself [about your feelings]. Do you want to be part of the change to make the world a better place, including more places for everyone? Or you want to participate in a competition.
[I believe that you should] not do something because it’s trendy, [but] because it’s right and fair.
TJ: Speaking of the hairdressing world at large, how do you expect the industry to grow further?

JD: We all know it takes time and patience is key. But, as we wait, the charity starts on our own sites and platforms. We can all share, and be a part of, the long-term change we want to see in our businesses.
Bringing more education to our business is one thing – but finding and inviting a hairdresser to a party is another. People are interested to see that these changes continue in the next generation.
