Solar Coupled Solar hot water systems, commonly known as rooftop solar hot water heaters, have the panel and tank mounted on the roof. They come in different banks (generally 12, 24 and 36 tubes) and are very efficient. Some might say a little too efficient as we have had cases where people have installed 24 and 26 pipe systems from other companies and they make loud noises at the top and in the tank when the water is being carried back. Tray areas are not a good idea as they can trap leaves between the tubes, making the system less efficient.

We were recently contacted by a Hornsby customer whose Edwards solar hot water system had stopped producing hot water.
While on site, our solar hot water specialist, John, ran a series of tests to assess the problem with Edwards’ system.
One of the main causes of problems was ants ingesting electrical components in the housing. This is a common problem we encounter with many hot water systems in Sydney. Usually, the movement of ants and debris can short out the thermostat, stopping the hot water heater from operating.
Most hot water heaters are warm and dry, which is an ideal environment for ants to live safely and undisturbed.
Same Day Hot Water
Two common problems that ants can cause when living in a hot water system include missing electrical components and broken insulation.
Inside almost all hot water tanks is foam insulation. Often made from polystyrene, this foam reduces heat loss and thereby improves the water heater’s energy efficiency and saves money. Ants often eat through this insulation, creating “holes” in the thermal insulation, thereby losing thermal efficiency. If you open the access panel (usually on the bottom of the hot water heater), you may notice a sediment-like substance on the bottom of the tank.
