Although it presents the same hazards as scaffolding when it is pulling and standing, working in a safe scissor lift depends on considering the specific scissor lift opportunities, obstacles, and safe procedures. For this reason, the yellow card course provides students with the knowledge and skills to:
This is important because employers, through their employees, need to maintain their scissors regularly to ensure they are safe to use, such as to prevent lifting equipment from collapsing. Operators should be familiar with the manufacturer’s inspection and maintenance instructions. This usually includes:
In less than a year, OSHA investigated 10 preventable deaths and more than 20 preventable injuries from various incidents involving scissor lifts. OSHA’s investigation found that the majority of injuries and deaths were the result of employers’ failure to address fall protection, standing, and stability in particular.
Employers require their scissor lift operators to familiarize themselves with the procedure and procedures required in an emergency, as included in the manual from the manufacturer. Besides the platform controls, it includes emergency stops and manual traction control.
Scissor Lifts: Can Anyone Use Them?
Employers, through their employees, need to assess the workplace to identify all potential hazards in order to properly choose the most appropriate tools to use. Because electrical current can jump or arc from the line to the lift or operator, electric shock can occur even when the lift or operator is not touching the power line.
Employers must provide training to employees about the hazards and how to work safely and work around elevators. Training should include the following:
