Forward Fold Camper Reviews – So new it doesn’t even have a name yet… We’re breaking out the newly designed Cub Campers prototype to see if the hype can be believed.

I’m going to post it right now – I’m a huge fan of Cub Campers. They are simple, well made, easy to set up and pack up; they have everything you need in a caravan and can be towed anywhere. They’ve been around for around 400 years and pioneered the classic and often imitated folding hard floor that hasn’t changed much…until now.

We were lucky enough to get our hands on a prototype of the Cub’s forward-folding trailer, which will go on sale later this year. It’s a brand new trailer that’s quite different from what we’ve come to expect from the brand, so we were really excited to put this out to see what it could do.

Since it’s a prototype, the guys wanted to point out that a few things still need to be tweaked and will be changed on the production model (due for release in October). Sure, there were some things wrong, but I’m not too worried. This is a company with a strong reputation for quality products, so I’m sure the production models will be pretty polished.

What’s new in this matter besides the obvious opening lineup? The frame has been reshaped in such a way that the tow rails continue along the entire length of the caravan: the idea is to increase strength and flexibility on the ground. I’m a big fan of using free space in forwarding folders, and this one ranks up there with the best folders. There’s a pre-installed U-lounge, which lacked a hard table in the prototype… but I know on good authority that there will be one in October and, even better, the table will fold down to form a table. . platform for a second double bed, making it perfect for those traveling with tin covers. There is plenty of storage space both inside and outside the trailer. Both sides have a removable slide with roller bearings: one for the refrigerator and one for the generator, another refrigerator or other large items. Two large pull-out storage drawers keep everything from cookware to return tools well-organized and within easy reach. The stainless steel kitchen is located at the rear of the trailer and has two Smev burners (powered by two 4kg gas cylinder holders on the drawbar) and a sink connected to an electric pump and a 80 litres. Although the prototype lacked an awning, with it in place it would be a good place to cook a meal or lounge in a folding chair and say to yourself, “So peaceful…” a few dozen times.

The electrical system is located on the driver’s side in the rear and is powered by a 100 AH deep cycle battery using 240V and 12V outlets distributed throughout the trailer. The entire show is overseen by Redarc’s battery management system, which can be monitored with a digital meter and also allows for solar power if you’re staying in the same spot for a few days and want to keep the amps flowing.

So let’s be honest here. There are more than a couple of forward folding trailers on the market today, is this one very different from the rest?

The thing is, Cub Campers have always worked. The quality, fit and finish are perfect and for sheer practicality they have always been hard to pass up. Sure, this one is about a thousand more expensive than the others; but it’s still under that magical $30,000 mark, and perhaps most importantly, this is 100% Australian designed, built and owned, and has used Australian products wherever possible; and Cub customer service stands behind the product. To me, it’s worth the slightly higher asking price…that and knowing I think I’ll still have one of these trailers in 20 years.
