High Sierra At3 Carry On Wheeled Backpack Review

I couldn’t have asked for better conditions to field test the High Sierra Classic 2 Summit 45L backpack. The first field test was conducted at the beginning of April 2022. The test location is the pine forests of New Jersey. Temperatures range from 70°F during the day to 55°F at night. The overnight test will take place in mid-April 2022. An 11-mile round trip with a fully loaded backpack. This is followed by an overnight camp. These are the parameters of a specific field test.

DISCLAIMER: (I am not affiliated with or sponsored by High Sierra.) I ordered the High Sierra Classic 2 Summit 45L Backpack online from HighSierra.com and waited 3-4 days for it to arrive. I was immediately surprised at how bright the candle was when I picked it up. When I opened the package, I realized that this is a quality backpack for the money. Once the backpack was properly fitted to my body, I found it to be comfortable with the waist pad sitting well on my hips and the shoulder straps fitting snugly but not too snugly. I could easily bring my equipment, tent, sleeping bag, ground cover and everything else needed for an overnight camping trip.

The materials used in the production of the Summit 45L backpack seem like high-quality ripstop. I didn’t notice any rips, tears, or loose stitches on my first inspection. Zippers and adjustable straps work smoothly. The 45 liter size is adequate and has more than enough room for everything I need for an overnight adventure. Small pockets on the waist strap could have been added to the pack, more on that later.

At 3.2 pounds, this pack certainly isn’t as light as some of the best lightweight packs on the market, but it’s certainly not far from average. A similar Gregory 45 liter pack weighs 2.8 pounds and retails for $199.99. A few extra ounces of weight can easily be gained by reducing the weight of other gear in your bag, and ultimately the weight of a heavier bag won’t outweigh the cost savings this bag provides.

Although this backpack does not have adjustable shoulder straps, the backpack has many adjustments to accommodate a wide range of body sizes. I am 5′-8″ and this backpack fits well when adjusted properly. The shoulder and waist pads are soft and keep the backpack comfortable on my travels. The chest strap is a 30″ shape and has the ability to slide up and down for a better position.

The Summit 45L backpack is made of Duralite ripstop material, which is water resistant. The package has a built-in waterproof cover, which is conveniently hidden at the bottom of the package.

The Summit 45L backpack is waterproof, well made and affordable. I found this pack to be sturdy, roomy and comfortable enough for a day trip, and it had everything I needed for an overnight camping trip, including tent and poles. This backpack is not too heavy for backpacking or camping and is definitely worth considering if you are looking for an affordable backpack for camping and camping. I wish this pack had storage pockets on the waist belts for cell phone or camera gear. I was able to buy a decent waist pack that fits from REI. There isn’t much to complain about with this backpack. After testing this affordable offering from High Sierra, I found it to be an overall great package for the price and features included. So far it has held up well and I would buy the High Sierra Classic 2 Series Summit 45L Backpack again.

Product Review: High Sierra Access Backpack

In a 40-liter package, Kardon packs a lot of features into one small bag. One of the most unique features of the pack is that the hip pads and straps are easily removable with simple Velcro straps. This means they can break after long hot backpacking trips. The suspension is a lightweight frame that surrounds the perimeter of the pack and is connected to an airtight seal that allows air to flow between the pack and the user. The strap is adjustable by pulling the double velcro shoulder straps out of the core of the pack, and is easy to adjust by inserting the straps into the upper or lower hole of the pack, no tools required. There’s a sleeping bag compartment, travel pole loops and even a place to attach a helmet or bike light. The package weighs 3 lbs 5 oz and retails for $179.99.

All in all, the Karadon 40 is an incredibly comfortable backpack. As a lightweight, low-energy package, it’s ideal for lighter loads and handles them well. Thin but soft foam-like padding on the shoulders and back does a good job of taking pressure off packed packs despite the thin profile. The padding feels like memory foam, only less durable and compresses to the shape of the shoulder or hip without creating pressure points. The back panel is a nice spring combo that sits above the actual metal/foam frame, preventing the gear in the pack from forming bulges that would otherwise push against the spine. This design also allows for additional air flow.

The frame is a simple aluminum tube that wraps around the perimeter of the pack and ends at the hip, but still easily supports the pack’s weight of around 25 kilos. It manages to become stiff and contoured during use without shifting or hardening when filled with heavy, high quality materials. The frame sits close to the back, which increases stability by keeping the center of balance low and close to the spine. This is ideal and makes the Karadon the best pack for climbing or rock climbing. The result is a pack that feels nimble, responsive and avoids rear movement as the pack can be pressed into a tight, recessed gear tube that stays in place.

The design of this pack is good, with a large main compartment, two water bottle pockets, two hip pockets, and a compact lid with a large and small zippered pocket (below). I was able to unpack all my gear without it getting messed up or lost. The hip pockets are big enough for snacks or a compass, but not too big for any of my cameras.

The package is surprisingly well built for its price category. The materials used, mostly high-denier nylons, are thick and have excellent resistance to scratches and tears. The frame is lightweight in construction, but offers more than enough stability to support the weight that can be filled. The zippers are also sturdy, with strong steel teeth to prevent clothes from catching or snagging, and multi-sized pull handles that fit most. All stitching is reinforced where needed and I saw no signs of stretching or unraveling anywhere.

40 liters is an amazingly large package. First, it limits the amount of gear you carry while backpacking, which certainly reduces the amount of weight that can be carried around. This is definitely a plus for me because I carry more if I can fit. This weight ratio, combined with a light package, makes for easy kilometers. Plus, it’s small enough to eat
