Brian Johnston, owner of Altitude, Johnno and Alpine Campers, has been building all Australian made compact apartments since 2000. Johnno’s Campers has become a nationally recognized compact condo, off-road camper for campers looking to rent or buy. It was a true testament to the power of non-camping roads as they discovered all of Australia’s road tracks and became the backbone of the Johnno Plan camps.
After selling Johnno’s Campers in 2003, he saw a void in the market for light and compact campers that could be towed behind motorcycles and small cars, which later became Elite Campers. With manufacturing costs in Australia, Brian was one of the first manufacturers to relocate overseas to manufacture products of the same standard and quality. Elite camps have caught on in the country and are still going strong.
Moving on in 2013, the Altitude campers have the same goal as Johnno’s campers to build the best quality on the road, starting with the road, simple condos, and going to condos after a while. Then there’s the horizontal front and adding the extra cost of making it in Australia the interior space it’s built on the coast to achieve the same level and quality. The market is rapidly shifting to hybrids, and the Altitude camper takes the same approach to keeping quality and standards above all else.
Meanwhile, Altitude still builds 100 per cent hybrids from the ground up at Maryborough Qld, including the chassis, foam-steel body and lightweight but sturdy interior. In 2020, the Aussies staged a merger in Maryborough, where they parted ways with Altitude Campers, and the new company, Alpine Campers, helped establish itself as an entirely Australian-built company. Brian Johnston has over 30 staff supporting Australian and international staff.
