King George Hotel Picton – We thank you all for the announcement of the DA sanctioned Stonequarry Bar and Grill and the support of those interested in the show. Based on the interest and suggestions we’ve received, we’d like to mention some insights into the building process and the end result we want.
Ultimately our vision is to ensure that the pub lasts for a long, long time and we want the pub to continue to serve locals and visitors alike. Live music and entertainment will be high on the agenda, but we also want to make sure the George is a free venue, providing new places for people to relax, eat good food, sample some good beer and enjoy their family.
King George Hotel Picton
Our vision was inspired by the history of the pub, the stories it holds, how the building developed, the Georgian era in Picton and the fact that King George IV himself helped tell the story. The house gave food after the big flood.

It is important to note that the pub has been closed for 18 months and is very close to closing permanently or being converted to other uses such as offices or apartments. The house has been lovingly restored and now comes alive again. The restoration of the George IV Inn following the 2016 floods has quietly slipped into the background since the new owners took over.
Being a legal church, the process can seem difficult and slow. We are working at all necessary levels with councils and heritage and urban planning experts and their consultants as well as our own design and construction teams.
The aim has always been to not only re-open the pub to the community, but to establish the George IV Inn as a family-friendly venue, with many places where you can eat and drink. Most local people are familiar with the various histories and stories of George IV and are convinced that George’s character is not lost – given the opportunity to tell it. It’s great to see how many people have come forward and offered their support and services to help rebuild and clean up with the new owners.
The first phase of the project is the renovation of the existing sandstone building. New owners have spent a lot of time and investment in complying with all the rules and regulations for free, and in short doing this seems to be almost unchanged.

The fact is that almost every corner of the pub needs to be touched up in some way, every wooden panel has been painstakingly removed, the battens replaced, the walls dried and then the panels re-sanded, varnished and replaced. The same process was used for all the wood floors in the den and living room. The whole pub has been recycled, the fire replaced, all the plumbing replaced and the beer garden and front of the pub dug up and a new site requested, the list goes on.
Coming into the old dining area and kitchen, we soon realized that the house was more damaged than originally thought and so we had to go through the weight of the DA process as mentioned above. The second phase, which has just received DA approval, is all about making the old restaurant area more functional, providing winter warmth for diners and extending the pub area from what was previously hidden away. These areas have now been renovated to provide more public seating, a new kitchen and new equipment.
This part of the pub is a mix of different eras including the Georgian, Edwardian and Art Deco periods with the addition of the 1970s! From the design process, a lot of effort has gone into keeping everything cool, quirky and unexpected, because together they make George’s Pub what it is today. This part of the pub has also suffered the most damage and much of it is undergoing the rebuilding required of all heritage buildings.
A new addition to the pub is the highlight of the outdoor deck and bar area which allows you access to some of the best views in Picton, down to the canal and the Inscription. It is clear that many pubs are not open to public access. From the deck you look out over the stone barn and main stable area and the hills beyond. The beautiful canal trees provide deep shade in summer and the entire structure was designed to work with all levels of heritage architecture and history.

It should be noted that the artist is happy with the small trees and the beautiful landscape is only to show off the house, most of the house will not be visible from the street due to the old trees at the water line. We hope to work with the council to create a community canal cleaning project, however this is a process we need to undertake.
We have also been approved to restore the old heritage front post and rail fence, giving it a new, friendly and welcoming look as well as security. This phase of development will include an interactive play area for children and a kids’ club where children can enjoy watching movies while parents can relax and enjoy meals. And drink fresh water.
The whole experience is being built around the rich history of the pub and Picton and we can’t wait to share it with you as it all unfolds.

Patrons at Picton’s iconic George IV Inn erupted in cheers when they lost their first firefighter.
Owners Ross Robinson and Adam Cryer, along with managers Peta and Brett Cohen, greeted customers through the doors Wednesday morning.
The beer was served cold and many reviewers commented on how beautiful the pub looked after the refurbishment.
Picton local Derek Slinger was the first to drink beer at the bar in more than 500 days.

“I think the pub is open,” said Mr Slinger. “I canceled going to Queensland today because I didn’t want to miss the opening.
Mr Cryer said the main challenge was working with everyone to restore and improve the pub to its former glory.
“We want the pub to be a place for families and we are excited about the future development of the pub,” he said.
“When we bought the pub, we thought we could fix the link but we would have to redistribute the whole pub and do it all over again and get a new beer machine.

Cohen’s was the licensee before the pub closed in June due to rainwater flooding.
“We’re doing what we love, and I’m excited to see who walks through the door today,” Mrs. Cohen said.
“We left our base with a building to renovate and learned a lot during the project.
“I’m delighted to see the second phase starting as Ross and Adam want to keep the same approach as we had before the pub closed.

“It’s great to see the investment in George. I’m sure he’ll be well protected.”
Food truck chef Harry Haubert said the food will be “nothing flash” but will do well with serving sizes.
“We are ready as much as we can for all the supporters. I hope we can meet their expectations.”
