Lancelin Wa Things To Do – Top things to do in Lancelin include surfing on the back beach, quad biking on the dunes and fishing charters in the Indian Ocean.
Lancelin in Western Australia was once a small fishing village. There is still a lot of fishing, but over time Lancelin has focused more on tourism.

The Sand Dunes In Lancelin & The Pinnacles Desert (australia)
If you want to treat it like a beach town, that’s perfectly acceptable. The biggest option is Lancelin Beach, where you can rent surfboards or stand-up paddleboards from $25. But Back Beach is notorious for getting big swells – most surfers go to Back Beach to test their skills.
Other things to do in Lancelin include fishing charters. Reel Force Charters offers fishing charters where you head out to the reef, making Lancelin a great place to fish. Ruby snapper, skipjack trevally, flounder, southern bluefin tuna and sea bass are the species found in the Indian Ocean waters around Lancelin. A full-day fishing adventure, including all equipment, costs from $300 per person.
If you’re feeling sporty, Lancelin Golf Club and Lancelin Bowling Club should keep you busy for a while. But Lancel’s main attraction is the massive dune system behind the town.
Lancelin Sand Dunes 4WD Tours go up and down the dunes in a specially converted bus. They stop for a quick ride on the sandboarding, although if you really want to try sandboarding, it’s best to rent a board from the Dunn parking lot.
Lancelin Sand Dunes
Lancelin also has sandboarding tours. The twist on these tours is that you can ride the dunes on a quad bike. Sand Dune Quad Tours last about two and a half hours and cost from $119.
If you decide to stay in Lancelin – Lancelin Caravan Park is right on the coast – don’t expect much in the way of good food. But there are a few options. Endeavor Tavern does pub classics, Wendy’s Asian Kitchen adds a touch of spice, and Lobster Trap Cafe specializes in breakfast and seafood.
The Perth to Lancelin drive is 126 kilometers long and the driving time from Perth to Lancelin is approximately one hour and 25 minutes. You can stop on the drive from Perth up the west coast to Geraldton. To zoom down on a sandboard with tens of thousands of trips each year, you should too! It’s cheap and a lot of fun. Book your table here before you arrive in town so it will be waiting for you on arrival.
Walk the bay between the north and south points early in the morning (just after dawn) and you will often find them in very shallow water around feeding or playing. The further you go the better chance you have of finding them.
Hopkins St Beach, Lancelin
Explore the vast dune network by 4WD bus with 45-minute tours from the Dunes car park every hour from 9am to 4pm daily. However, you should pre-order to avoid disappointment.
From 11.00am most days the fishing boats return to the jetty in the middle of the bay catching western rockfish (crayfish). If you’re in town for a few days, ask the fishermen about buying cray from the boats, which is possible at certain times of the year if they have quota left.
If you go a few kilometers south of the jetty, you will find Back Beach. There is often a big swell and the best time for a surf, boogie board or swim is in the morning when there is a light breeze. If you don’t have a board, good news; You can rent one here.
Recently renovated, this lookout offers spectacular views of the island, the Indian Ocean, and the sand dunes beyond. Access is from the Beach Hotel forecourt or from Hinchcliffe Street.

For me it’s a WA fishing town straight out of a Tim Winton book. I love the color of the sea, the dolphins that regularly swim off the beach, the huge dunes at the back of the city and most of all the endless beach.
This is not the place to come for fine dining, good shopping or delicious coffee. On the other hand, if you like uncrowded beaches, great outdoors and don’t mind the wind, Lancelin is a great place to visit.
If you’re not into sailing, you might not know that Lancelin is one of the top windsurfing destinations in the world. Many of the world’s best windsurfers have made Lancelin their base because of the exceptional winds and waves that can be found here.
The Ultimate 5 Day Perth To Kalbarri Road Trip
For kite and windsurfing, Lancelin offers something for all levels, from beginners to professionals. World-class wave spots are found on the outer reef, while freestylers and beginners will love the flat water spots closer to shore.
Stretching for nearly two kilometers, the Lancelin Sand Dunes are the largest sand dunes in Western Australia. If you thought you were in the Middle East you wouldn’t be far off the mark. The Australian Army conducts training exercises here in preparation for deployment to the Middle East, as it truly resembles a desert landscape.
You can ride the dunes with a dirt bike and four-wheel drive or rent a sandboard from the local shop. Lancelin is one of five designated off-road areas in Western Australia and has a large number of quad bikes, dirt bikes and four-wheel drives available. If you’re with a car, it’s a good idea to bring your own recovery equipment, as pulling your car out of the dunes can be an expensive exercise.
The best time to go is dawn and dusk, when the sun turns the landscape a deep pink. Climb to the top of a dune for panoramic views of the coast and hills.
Thing To Do
You’ll also find a seal colony off the islands, and humpback whales can be seen off the reef during migration season.
The bay area is perfect for exploring on a paddleboard or kayak. You can easily access Lancelin Island or paddle around Edward Island on the southern tip of the city. Choose a calm day or go early in the morning before the sea breeze picks up.
You can rent kayaks or paddleboards near the fish bridge or ask the tourist information about guided tours.
On a clear and calm day, with an easterly wind, the back beach south of the township is a great place to surf and can provide a great beach break for beginners to more advanced surfers. If you have four-wheel drive, you can drive along the beach, park your car and surf.
Things You Must Do In South West Wa
There’s no better way to end the day than with a cold beer at the Endeavor Pub, which prides itself on having the best beer garden in Australia. I think they are not far off the mark.
The new lobster trap is one of Lancel’s best additions. The gourmet garden cafe is perfect for coffee and lunch – lobster of course.
The best and most comfortable place to stay is Lancelin Lodge. The backpacker-style lodge offers friendly, affordable accommodation and has often been voted the best YHA in Western Australia.
Good news for all camping lovers. Lancelin Caravan Park has been refurbished with excellent new facilities including a pool and spa and is due for completion in early 2020.
