Please note that the toenail does not change immediately after this treatment. However, the fungus dies and the result of this procedure appears when new shoots grow. Although laser treatment is effective in killing fungus, new fungal infections can still occur. People with a genetic predisposition to this disease have a high chance of being infected with other fungi. Patients with aggressive toenail fungus often require periodic treatment.

Why Laser Treatment Is Necessary For Advanced Toe Fungus Infections
Onychomycosis is a fungus that grows on, under or under the nail. The fungus thrives in warm, moist environments, such as sweaty socks and shoes. Nails become thick, yellow or brown, or brittle (split and crushed).
Although effective temporarily, many cannot take oral antifungal medications such as Lamisil due to side effects. Laser treatment for nail fungus or warts uses a focused beam of light calibrated to a specific frequency that targets the cells responsible for the infection. The laser penetrates the toenails and eliminates the fungus in the nail bed and nail plate. It is recommended to treat all the toes to eradicate the fungus that has not yet appeared; thus avoiding repetition. Most patients require 3 or more treatments; depending on the duration and severity of the infection.
Plantar warts are caused by human papillomavirus or HPV. It usually appears as a small growth that appears on the weight-bearing area of the foot, such as the heel or forefoot. Due to pressure, these plantar warts can grow under the thick, hard layer of skin (callus). Podiatrists recommend lasers with salicylic acid, minor surgery, OTC cooling sprays, or the new Swift microwave wart treatment.
If you have very thick toenails, it is recommended to see a podiatrist at 878-313-3338. You want to thin the nail so that the laser can more effectively penetrate the fungus filled nail bed. The patient must remove all traces of nail polish and clean the feet, especially the cuticles, as this can cause complications with the laser. A deep or large wart may need to be scraped before treatment to allow the laser to penetrate the root of the wart.
Fungal Nail Infections
Use tolnaftate or undecylenic acid antifungal treatment 1-2 times a day until the nail clears up, then a few times a week to maintain results and prevent re-infection. Clean everything your feet touch before treatment (nail clippers/files, shower, bedding, etc.) with Clorox, Lysol, or fungicide.
For better and faster results – disinfect all other shoes (with sporicidal anti-fungal shoe spray, available in our office), pull out the insole, spray deep into the shoe to cover the toes. Dry the shoes completely before putting them on, and if the weather is good, leave them in the sunlight, the ultraviolet helps to destroy the mold spores. Spray the shoes again after they have dried to kill any fungus that may still be alive from the first spray. Let them dry completely.
Soak your feet for 15 minutes a day for about 10 days after each laser treatment. To prevent reinfection, use tea tree oil, hydrogen peroxide, a mixture of one part vinegar to three parts water, or 1 teaspoon of bleach in half a gallon of water (enough to cover your toes in a small puddle). Additionally, essential oils, Epsom salts, and baking soda mixed together can help eliminate fungal infections and foot odor. For this combo, combine 1/2 cup baking soda, 1/2 cup Epsom salt, 1/4 cup 3% hydrogen peroxide with 4 cups hot water and a drop of your favorite essential oil. Wash and allow nails to dry thoroughly before wearing socks and shoes. Combining medications, infusions, or topicals with laser treatments has provided the most effective results and protection for your investment.
You may have tried over-the-counter medications for fungus at your local pharmacy without improvement. Christina Teimouri Dpm, a local podiatrist, one of the best podiatrists in Pittsburgh, can write a prescription for oral medication to take orally or apply to the toenails to fight toenail fungal infections. They can also help with toenail fungus laser treatment. If you have toenail fungus, our podiatrist can destroy it painlessly using a laser – a special beam of light.

Depending on the thickness and severity of the nail fungus, you may need 1-4 laser sessions to treat nail fungus. One session can last 10 minutes or more. Dr. Tina usually recommends topical products to prevent the fungus from coming back, just like you do when you get nail fungus. This helps nail fungus treatment to be more effective.
Toenails grow about 1 mm per month; therefore, they are not immediately visible. Your podiatrist will trim your old toenails as they grow. Usually, in 4-6 months, you can see clear nails coming out of the cuticle. Usually a year later – nails without fungus!
For toenail fungus, we use the most effective laser. This laser is effective in treating chronic toenail fungus. The laser emits a beam of light that is focused on the target area, the infected toenail. The laser penetrates the toenail and vaporizes the fungal hyphae under the nail plate where the infection is located, pulling the infection up and removing it. Toenails grow in a few months, without fungus. In the initial consultation, our experts will go over the treatment and procedure to remove the fungus.
One treatment is usually enough, but sometimes it depends on the person and the condition of the nail, as determined by the podiatrist. We offer follow-up care packages to all patients.
