While many businesses ground to a halt when the pandemic hit in 2020, sportswear brand Lorna Jane flourished and maintained a steady online sales rate throughout the coronavirus crisis and beyond.
Sportswear designer Lorna Jane Clarkson achieved this by knowing exactly what her clients wanted. The Englishman, who moved to Australia with his family at the age of 11, started out as a fitness instructor. Clarkson explains how she “couldn’t find [clothes] that met all my requirements in terms of functionality and fashion. I was doing over 25 lessons a week with 100 to 120 people watching, so it was like a performance piece where I created my own lessons and put together music from scratch.”
Everyone in the class watched her move and the participants said they liked the way she was dressed. So, one day the teacher she shared a house with “showed me basic things like sewing, and then one day I just unwrapped my beloved Leo and started creating.”
For two or three months, Clarkson produced custom sportswear: “Almost everyone in the class was wearing Lorna Jane [and then I thought], ‘This is really happening.’ I must be in something.” Selling her first collections from a pop-up store at the dance studios where her classes were held, Clarkson then moved to a smaller showroom.

Clarkson then quit his job and, on the advice of a friend, opened his first store in 1990. While the brand continued to grow, the global financial crisis hit in 2008.
Seizing the opportunity when others couldn’t, Lorna Jane’s low costs allowed the brand to grow, says Clarkson: “We were a small business at the time, which allowed us to be more flexible than most. Our rivals during the challenge. We only had a handful of stores, and at a time when most brands were downsizing, we were able to grow and capture new opportunities that would never have opened up to us if the bigger brands hadn’t taken the risk. enterprises. We had a small portfolio of stores and at that time we took every opportunity to expand.”
The business grew slowly and by 2012 had 50 stores in Australia. Designed and originally manufactured in Australia, the brand then reached a critical stage where it could not supply enough wastewater. Luckily, Australian fabric supplier Clarkson offered to open a factory in China and has been with them for the past 25 years.
Then came the global expansion. Clarkson states that because Lorna Jane “is different and has a signature style, she is a worldwide success. We went on trips and saw products that people were interested in, and then we tried to make them and sell them abroad.” The brand currently has over 150 stores worldwide in Australia, New Zealand, USA, Singapore, Malaysia, France, UAE and New Caledonia.

Sustainability is also at the heart of business. Clarkson is very clear about this ethos and ongoing commitment, noting that the brand “never wants to overproduce. The main thing is to create a quality product so that people buy less, buy better, not more.” The brand uses recycled fabrics, its disposable bags are compostable, and its large bags are reusable. This extends to a plant in China, where the company works to ensure the purity of water and works with the mildest dyes and detergents on the planet.
Clarkson’s current collections include 1990s-inspired pieces, tie-dye prints and limited editions, and the designer sticks to her original style for comfortable yet stylish pieces.
“Now our customers are loving the retro style in oversized T-shirts and biker shorts. This look is reminiscent of the famous post-workout photos of Lady Diana in the 1990s. There’s also a resurgence of tie dye, which our customers can’t get enough of. We sell our oversized bras, leggings, T-shirts and sweatshirts with this print – this trend will continue.”
Along with limited monthly releases, Lorna Jane launches its core line of Essentials, premium outdoor essentials to wear season after season.

The brand is due to expand by January 2022: “[We’re] working on an Active Living line that incorporates sports technology into everyday wear, so you basically feel like you’re wearing sportswear everywhere,” says Clarkson. “In the next year, the company We put a lot of emphasis on technology, not only in our products, but also in our internal systems. “
As for advice for those looking to start a business, Clarkson says, “For me, any business has to be passionate. What you do should be different – product or marketing [or how] you communicate your idea or product to the client.”
“If you want to take your business to the global level, start simply by selling online. This will give you an idea of where your customers are and then you will know where to open your stores or distribution centers when your business is ready.” Always work with entrepreneurs who support you and help you grow your brand. These relationships are important and should be nurtured so that your customer gets the full brand experience every time.”
