A clip has finally surfaced online thanks to a documentary screened at the Tribeca Film Festival, in which Theroux encounters a rather destructive church member.

“You broke in,” implored Catherine, Scientologist. “Are you so stupid that you can’t even see the road closed sign? Is there something you don’t understand? Closed? Do you know what a road is??”
Theroux tried to prove he had a permit to be there, but to no avail when he got into the car, leaving only one person outside the car filming a BBC reporter.
, Theroux said: “I approached the church more than a decade ago to see if they could let me in and make a documentary.
“I thought I might be able to bring a nuance and perspective to people’s understanding of a belief that was ridiculed. Like I’ve done with other non-mainstream stories, I wanted to see from the inside and build a relationship between people connection with his clergy and his congregation. But I was repeatedly rejected.

Unfortunately, Theroux was never invited into the main church complex. Along with director John Doyle, the duo created for the camera a reenactment of what happened in the compound.
“During the filming of my film, I came to believe that I was being followed by private investigators, that someone in Clearwater, Florida (Scientology’s spiritual sanctuary) was trying to hack my emails, secretly filming the film, and I even I’ve had a police call on more than one occasion, not to mention a flurry of legal letters from Scientology’s lawyers,” he continued.
“However, at every step, I was open to the virtues of Scientology and tried to see what it was: a belief system not too different from other religions, capable of expanding the soul and shattering the spirit

The full movie will be screened at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 17 with an undisclosed release date. Meanwhile, Theroux will be busy working on two new documentaries.
