With so many digital devices and impacts on the market, in recent years some developers have looked to create devices that go beyond “big compressors” or “equalizer stars”. Sometimes it takes the form of real hardware models that are rare or unacceptable, and in other cases it means working with musicians and producers to recreate their particular hardware setup using Apps.

That’s the case here, IK has teamed up with Los Angeles-based professional engineers Gavin Lurssen and Reuben Cohen to bring their philosophy and sound to your Mac or PC, or True to your iPad if you choose the iPad version. As with Waves doing “signature series” effects with producers, the focus here is on the sound rather than giving you access to all the virtual hardware involved. That’s the decent thing to do, and it should end there: focus on one stereo file at a time.

You might think that Lurssen Mastering (also doubles as your DAW plugin) is very similar to T-RackS, IK’s valuable manager. And the single window interface has a very similar design. However, it strives to keep things simple, unlike iZotope’s more complex and relevant Ozone.
Drop your mixed audio files into the program and you can choose from a predefined set based on category to get started. At first you may be surprised by the apparent simplicity of the set of controls, but this fact is not uncommon in hardware management studios. The intricate wiring was done behind the scenes and the engineers actually operated just a few controls, a few keystrokes and buttons, to master the rails. Unlike mixing, it doesn’t modify every part of the project when you own it. You are dealing with a full stereo signal. Interestingly, some presets “lock” certain parameters when loaded because, as Lurssen himself put it, “at the time we set, we don’t change those settings.” So in essence, you’re actually getting the grooming skills that the men themselves will use.
Modeled after a real studio, you get three main management sections. The Drive button on the left allows you to turn on the input signal to warm it up. The five EQ knobs in the center let you cut or boost five frequencies, and the button on the right lets you raise or lower the EQ knob by the same amount at the same time to “ride” a transition across a lane. . . The EQ knobs can be set anywhere you like and the Push knobs will all adjust them by the same amount from their respective positions. You can control in mono or stereo and bypass the entire effect, which is good for A/B comparison.
The program supports limited automation of the Drive and Push knobs, even when running in stand-alone mode, and you can view and edit this data in the Waveform section. I’m not sure where the idea is here – it’s useful for adjusting volume and intensity on a track, but I always assume that the goal of mastering to create a constant level is not something that changes. No. EQ automation can be more useful even if it isn’t. In plugin mode, some dynamics can also be run automatically using your host system.

When it’s time to export your entire master in plug-in format, just do the normal channel export, and in standalone mode you can export one or more tracks at 32-bit, 96kHz. Of course, you can also save the project for your boss to follow along with if you need to come back and modify it later. It’s less messy than opening a full DAW project with a huge chain of plugins in the mixer.
The mastering process is about reinforcing what is already there, rather than having to have a “signature” sound like a recording or mixing engineer might do. However, it is important to prepare properly and having the help of leading industry experts in the real world is always a good thing. The Lurssen Mastering Console takes a lot of the guesswork and confusion out of ownership and comes with a great pedigree. A lot of the basic work is done for you and then it’s up to you to edit the settings. Purists may like good grain control over all, but there are plenty of options elsewhere for those who do.
The regular price of EUR360 or around $400 seems a bit high, to be honest, while the regular price of the Ozone 7 is $249 (although the Advanced version is more). Ozone may be a different scientific tool to master, but it’s very good and not very difficult to learn. Lurssen Mastering Console is easier to choose and will feel more friendly, especially for less experienced users. It sounds as good as you’d expect, even if you want to dip your toes in the water, the iPad version is a cheaper way to go, though its full functionality unlock still costs you $100. Anyway.
