A 19 Year Old Finds His Niche In Hospitality
NOVA works exclusively with people with disabilities or significant obstacles to work. We have excellent success and significant career development. Our Campbelltown office staff also support people who are deaf or hard of hearing. NOVA is not a protected workshop or a “business service”. NOVA Employment Consultants (ECs) are important in helping NOVA trainees get our first job. They start getting to know us at the end of our first year at NOVA so that they can better understand our skills and abilities and which jobs interest us. We thought it would be fun to get to know them better too! So we interviewed EC Andrew Abrahams from NOVA’s Campbelltown office.
Andrew: Focusing on the big picture. Once you guys find a job, it’s worth it – it’s the most rewarding thing.
Andrew: Hmmm, while I was in school, I was working in the real estate business on Saturdays from about 9:00 until about 13:00 or 14:00. I was getting $ 20 for a full day – I thought it was so good back then! What is that, about $ 4 or $ 5 an hour? (Laughs)
Andrew: Definitely get clients and help them stay in their jobs. It is also always interesting to see how different companies operate and to learn about so many different types of jobs.

Andrew: When employers don’t understand disabilities and may have too high expectations. I don’t mind explaining and answering their questions – I actually like doing it, but it can be difficult at first.
Andrew: I once assisted a client who was renovating the pools. He worked on a swimming pool from a four-story rooftop apartment. Part of the job involved carrying resin buckets across four levels of scaffolding. It has been difficult! As you can see, I’m not much of a physical person! (Laughs)
Andrew: Probably this pizzeria nearby. I love preparing food and it’s always nice when you enjoy supporting a customer.
Andrew: They have a lot of work experience in many industries. Guys, taste everything and find out what you want to do. You are experienced in what you want and mostly you have a good clear direction when you come to us. It is wonderful to see you at the beginning of the two years and how much you have lived and grown by the end.

Andrei: When I put a client (at work) I want him to stay there for a long time; I want them to have fun. So learning the importance of real, relevant and sustainable feasible work is difficult but really important.

After attending NOVA Transition to learn all the skills to get ready for work, through NOVA Employment in Rose Hill, Sydney, 19-year-old Luke landed a role as a waiter in a cafe. Cherry Beans.
Luke joined NOVA Transition in 2019 as manager of NOVA Employment Rouse Hill, Wayne Wumbaka recalls: “Luke entered the Transition to Work program very enthusiastic and motivated, but lacking in confidence and needed to build that trust as he wants to work. with people .”
Transitions In Lives Of People With Intellectual Disability
During the transition program, Luke took on different work experience roles in different industries to see where his skills matched best. He has spent his time in retail, business, administration and catering, and it was in hospitality that he found his niche.
“The work experience helped him develop the communication skills he needed to deal with people and also the confidence to deal with his colleagues and clients,” said Wumbaka.
According to Luke’s mother Carolyn, as a child Luke wanted to be a drummer and a player. “In high school he was very active and friendly, but one of my biggest fears was that he might be hired. Since he came to NOVA, he has grown more mature and when I see Luke today, I am grateful for his ability to adapt to a changing world. “
After being employed for 12 months, Luke wants people to know that his life has changed for the better and he is happy to have made his mother proud. “I want to work. I work hard, clean hard and try.” His advice to others was: “be organized, work hard and get your job done.”

Al Caffe Cherry Beans is suited to an environment where he can use his talents and Wumbaka is proud of this work. “Luke has found an environment where he can use his strengths and his abilities,” he told him.
Renee Choi, owner of Caffe Cherry Beans, is also pleased with Luke as an employee. “Luke is very smart and we only had to train him once.” NOVA Transition supports young people with disabilities on their path to employment and independence by helping them prepare for work and find a job that suits them.
