Victoria’s markets are only 100m or so down the road and the CBD is a 10 minute or less walk away.
Ours was a one bedroom park view studio with panoramic views of the magnificent Flagstaff Gardens and the skyline to the west. Light, bright, and spacious enough, the room is designed to include a compact, stylish kitchen (which is something Oaks excels at), air conditioning, extensive modern appliances, and a private balcony with enviable views. The walls are decorated with minimalist black and white cityscapes, which is a stylish touch, while the comfy silver poufs reflect a style reminiscent of those lucky enough to stay at The Standard in Hollywood.
Check-in is a breeze, the staff are lovely and you certainly can’t get lost in your room – the reception is small but spotlessly clean and offers a quaint little sitting area to flip through a newspaper or magazine. Oaks on William has a curated selection of on-site offerings including a cafe and bar, a small gym, and business facilities if required.

You need to drive onto the grid for a world of culinary delights to hit you in the nose as you stroll, but nearby is Sky Bird Restaurant for a delicious buffet and well-priced breakfast 20 meters north along William. Speaking of which, Bird’s Basement, below it, is a hot spot for jazz. The best tip for food is to head into town and start sniffing the alleys for something tasty. Before going to a show at the Princess Theatre, we discovered that OM Vegetarian uncovered super cheap vegetarian meals (keep in mind we weren’t looking for cheap deals, but the smell and laid-back vibe of this one was irresistible!). We shelled out $6.50 for the all-you-can-eat ‘thali deal’ for three varieties of vegetarian stews including basmati rice, snap peas and freshly baked naan.
