More powerful than your typical toy quadcopter, but not as intimidating as DIY enthusiast models, the DJI Phantom 2 Vision+ hits the sweet spot for anyone looking to start shooting videos and photos from the sky.
The DJI Phantom Vision 2+ is a quadcopter drone that’s easy to set up and ultimately simple to use for aerial photography and video. It’s fun to fly, well designed, has great battery life for its class and can be set up to navigate the flight path painlessly independently.
Video quality is on par with low-end POV cameras. While the flight time is longer than most RTF helicopters, you’ll want to add an extra battery or two and extra propellers for the cost. Ground control features may be too limited for more experienced users.
An excellent entry point into the world of aerial photo and video, DJI’s Phantom 2 Vision+ is worth the price for its simple setup and use.
Which Dji Phantom 2 Vision Should You Buy?
Well, anyone with $1,160 to give up on a new hobby. (This will set you back around £890 in the UK and around AU$1,300 in Australia.) Still, it’s a pretty reasonable price to get the Vision+ ready to fly and shoot.
If you don’t stop to charge the battery or read the manual (you’ll need to do both before your first flight, of course), you can take it out of the open air in less than 10 minutes.
The quadcopter itself is largely unchanged from its predecessor, the Phantom 2 Vision. You’ll find all the conveniences like color-coded, self-tightening propellers for easy installation and replacement, and a slot-loading battery pack — with no connectors to bother with — that provides up to 25 minutes of flight time. . (More on that “up to” part in a moment).
The cameras on the Vision+, while looking different, appear to be the same, at least in specs: a 14-megapixel 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor with an f2.8 lens that shoots raw Adobe DNG and JPEG images. and video up to 1080p at 30fps and 720p at 60fps. You can also control ISO, exposure compensation, and white balance, and choose from a field of view of 140, 120, or 90 degrees.

The biggest change is camera support. With the original Vision, the camera is on an anti-vibration platform which is stable only on the tilt axis and the tilt range during flight (remotely controlled by the Mobile Vision app) is 60 degrees. The Vision+, however, has a three-axis gimbal like the one available in the Phantom 2 for use with GoPro cameras.
The gimbal actively stabilizes the camera in roll, pitch, and yaw directions and makes videos look smooth even with sudden movements. In addition, the camera can be tilted 90 degrees, allowing you to shoot straight down, straight ahead, and anywhere in between.
Again, there’s not much for Vision+ to set up the first time around. The propeller should be trimmed, but clearly marked so you don’t do it wrong and the propeller stands on its own so it locks up as the helicopter spins for takeoff.
Before flying, you need to charge three things: a Vision+ battery, a wireless extender, and an Android or iOS mobile device. The remote control also requires four AA size batteries.

The helicopter’s battery is charged via the included wall charger or an optional car charger, while the range extender draws its power from a micro-USB port connected to a computer or wall adapter (not included). It would be nice if both could complement with a little reminder from the charger, but it’s something you should get used to before flying.
You need a smartphone equipped with the DJI Vision app, which among other things lets you see what the camera sees, control the camera and its settings, view real-time flight telemetry, and set up autopilot flight plans for up to 16 waypoints.
There have been several app and firmware updates since Vision+ was released in April. Once you’re fully charged, you’ll want to install the latest version of the Phantom 2 Vision+ Assistant software on your Windows or Mac computer, connect the helicopter via the micro-USB port and check and update your firmware.

To get ready to fly, you need to turn on Vision+, remote control, and wireless extender. Once the extender is ready (it takes about 30 seconds), you’ll connect your phone’s Wi-Fi to it and then open the Vision app.
The main component that makes the Vision+ easy to fly for beginners is the built-in DJI Naza-M flight control system. It consists of an inertial sensor, barometric altimeter, compass, GPS, LED flight indicator and controller that makes it all work together.
After a quick compass calibration — something you’d do before every new flight — which takes only a little more than turning the helicopter once horizontally and once vertically, you’ll be ready to take off. .

DJI makes the Phantom 2 Vision+ very sturdy, so even if you do experience a few minor crashes, it’s likely to last. It’s indestructible, though, and while the camera and gimbal survived a very steep drop after getting too close to a tree, it did require manual recalibration. Primarily, you will want to buy an extra set or two of props, as they will break.
At first, you’ll probably be navigating with your gaze, but the Vision+ is relatively small and you shouldn’t have to send it very far before you have trouble seeing and using the lights and signs to navigate. At that point you’ll be flying using your smartphone screen, which can be difficult if you’re flying in full sun. Another thing new pilots need to keep in mind.
The quadcopter GPS autopilot system is especially useful for those just starting out. When locked on at least six satellites (the Vision app and LED indicators on the helicopter will let you know when you’re okay), Vision+ will hover in place and maintain its position. This gives you time to stop and potentially avoid accidents.
