It may not have been the first photo I took in San Francisco, but it’s the oldest I’ve kept. Shows Powell Street near the cable car turntable at Powell and Market Streets. Pictured are two cable cars, and in the foreground is a Gray Line tour bus. The intersection is O’Farrell Street. The next two are Geary Street and Post Street.
Lefty’s is Lefty O’Doul’s restaurant, started by a baseball player and coach who was born in San Francisco and was popular there. (Note the baseball above the awning.) The restaurant still exists, but has moved to the corner of Geary Street. The Manx Hotel and the Crane Hotel no longer exist. The Manx Hotel was there in 1915, maybe earlier. Hotel St. Francis is on the block after Geary Street. The Chancellor Hotel is still across Post Street.
