The Prince of Wales Hotel in Merewether was the second local business in weeks to burn down in flames after a fire consumed The Edwards in June, which damaged much of the property.

The fire is believed to have started in the kitchen and firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in the area within 10 minutes of their arrival at the scene.

About 50 percent of the kitchen was burnt by flames. The main bar and other parts of the hotel also suffered from smoke.
“We are very grateful for the quick efforts of the great firefighting teams to put out the fire in a small area on the ground floor and minimize the damage to the hotel,” the Prince of Wales said in a statement.

The bottle shop was untouched by the fire and was operating as usual while the damage inside the hotel was assessed.

The building has been attracting locals and visitors since 1876, and in the last six months it has undergone an amazing renovation and we were excited to drop by to see it all.
The owners, Ty & Julianne, bought the company in February 2018, planning to refurbish from the beginning. After a little planning, organization and time, they started the renovation in March 2019 and officially opened it to the public during the long weekend in October. Still very new, fresh paint smells on the walls.

When we first entered we had to take twice and correct our eyes, the space underwent a transformation that is hard to believe he is still a Prince. In the open air, the main bar is the focal point, surrounded by a bistro, a children’s area, a sports bar and a public bar.

Working with the Newcastle team at Built Constructions, the entire renovation and repair took over six months, which for anyone with renovation knowledge is an incredibly fast twist!
The balcony upstairs has also been decorated with greenery from those behind sustainable environments. That’s right, real stuff, not a single fake plant all over the place. Being a plant lover, Prince has just hit the top of my personal pub list.
The newly renovated premises are divided into five separate zones; Bistro, public bar, sports bar, bar with balcony and all-powerful private dining room.
Entering the Bistro area, the spacious empty space lets natural light into the room, and the green color of the leaves, which colors the interior, creates a relaxing atmosphere. The walls are decorated with artwork by international surfing photographer Peter Boskovic, showing various local sights and surfing shots. Adjacent to the bistro is the best playground any child could want, with its own ‘cafe’ setting where they’ll serve you a cup of coffee while you enjoy a glass of wine or a pint of beer from the ‘real’ bar.

Opposite the bistro is a new and elegant public bar. It still has an old school feel with its curved edges, but adds extra style and sophistication with its metal beer taps and greenery hanging from the top.

Upstairs there is a Balcony Bar and a Private Dining Room that complete the style downstairs but with a hint of feminine and subtle industrial style.
