Scenic Hotel Group has two other hotels on the West Coast that will remain closed until at least next year.
“That’s what I miss; the hotel has lost its soul without the people to bring it back to life, so I can’t wait to see people here again,” he said.
“It was difficult because my family was at home in Dunedin so I was cleaning floors and stuff.

“We did a lot of video calls with my family, and they had to take me out to see the gardens,” she said.
It was originally due to open for the All Black Test on September 25 – the hotel was sold out – but will reopen for good on November 1.
The hotel will be undergoing renovations when it reopens, so the number of available beds will not be at full capacity.
“We’re doing this so we don’t go overboard with our low staff numbers, but if there’s demand, we’ll open a few more.”

The hotel employed more than 50 staff who had to be made redundant or sent to other Scenic Group hotels.
“It was very difficult to watch him up close and we had a close relationship with the old team.
“The closure and the uncertainty for all of them, it’s very difficult,” Clifton said.
The hotel will reopen with half its pre-pandemic workforce, but finding 25 new and experienced staff is “extremely difficult”.
