Carnival’s Ruby Princess Cruise Ship Spread Coronavirus Around The World
As of Monday, at least 440 passengers from six states and two territories had tested positive for Covid-19 after disembarking from the cruise ship, which docked twice in Sydney in March.
The NSW Health Minister later admitted there was a mistake, with 2,700 passengers allowed to disembark on March 19 without NSW health screening, many on interstate flights. Another passenger ship arrived on March 8.
At least five of the 19 deaths from Covid-19 in Australia so far have been cruise passengers.
On Monday, relevant state health officials revealed there were 211 cases of Ruby Princess in NSW, 71 in South Australia, 70 in Queensland, 43 in Western Australia, 22 in the ACT, 18 in Victoria and two in the Northern Territory.

That means Ruby Princess passengers account for a tenth of all coronavirus cases (4,512 as of Tuesday afternoon) and a quarter of all cases in South Australia, the state with the largest number of cases.
On 21 March, NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard admitted it was a mistake to allow passengers to disembark on 19 March without being tested.
On 27 March, NSW Health said it would “stop providing any further national or interstate figures, only our NSW figures”, despite the increase in interstate cases.
When the ship arrived on March 8, NSW health officials screened more than 360 passengers and at least nine were tested for Covid-19, but all passengers were disembarked and new passengers boarded before test results were available.

A Queensland Health spokeswoman said: “All other travelers have been given permission by Queensland Health to self-quarantine for 14 days and have phoned in advance to see their doctor or go to a local fever clinic if they develop symptoms.”
