A woman who lost nearly 100 pounds and had flaps of skin removed from her stomach says she was fatally decomposed after a flesh-eating bug ate large chunks of her stomach.

Laura Franks, 36, who weighs more than 300 pounds and is determined to lose weight, underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2013 but looked “like an empty sack” when her sudden weight loss left excess flesh hanging around her stomach.

Wanting to regain her confidence, Franks, from Atlanta, Georgia, paid $5,000 for a tummy tuck, liposuction and a Brazilian butt lift at a clinic in Cali, Colombia, in February of this year.
But instead of getting a dream body, she caught a flesh-eating bug that ravaged her stomach: “I hope I go home in a body bag.”
Franks talks about her nightmare experience when the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) issued a stark warning about the Brazilian butt lift, following the deaths of two women who underwent the procedure.
However, Franks, whose boyfriend is a rapper and actor who goes by the name Solo Styles, researched everything thoroughly before going any further.

“I wasn’t ready to go anywhere, I especially wanted the best for me, but I ended up finding a great place in Columbia,” Franks said. “It’s something I now regret every day.”
“But the photos of other patients looked fantastic and people were very happy with what they had done,” she said. “I contacted the clinic and got an immediate response. When I was ignored by surgeons from different clinics, it felt like this. A truly personal, professional response.”
Franks was an active teenager, but began gaining weight in college—she became very self-conscious about her size when she reached 300 pounds.
When she found out she was eligible for gastric bypass, where surgical staples are used to create a small pouch at the top of the stomach that connects directly to the small intestine, she happily went under the knife.

To her delight, her weight had dropped – but with the skin she had peeled off, it looked far less unsightly than the fat it had replaced.
“I had excess skin,” she said. “I tried so hard to tone up, but while the muscles underneath got stronger, the skin remained. It’s hard to lose that weight and then deal with another body confidence issue.”
Ultimately deciding that surgery was her only option, Franks thoroughly researched where to go, pouring over online reviews and testimonials and following other patients’ journeys via Instagram.
“My boyfriend told me I was beautiful the way I was and that I didn’t need to change anything, but I went ahead because I planned it before I met him,” Franks said. “Now I wish. Every day I asked.”

After a blood test at a nearby hospital, Franks arrived at the clinic on February 28 this year and described it as a “beautiful, welcoming building”.
She put on her surgical stockings and gown and everything seemed fine, but as she was wheeled into the operating room, doubts began to creep in.
“I looked around and things didn’t look right. The room had plastic patio chairs and personal belongings like staff bags,” he said. “There was panic when I felt the needle going through the anaesthetic. People are now saying to me: ‘Why? Are you going on? Why didn’t you say anything?’ They don’t understand how quickly it happened.”
“I had a few minutes to take it all in and relax before I told them to hold on,” Franks said. “I actually remember waking up during the operation and feeling a lot of pain. I tried to scream but I just didn’t. I didn’t know if I was making a sound. It was terrible.

After his arrival, Franks was taken to a recovery room, and for the next two days she surprisingly felt better.
However, five days after his operation, his bandages were removed for the first time, revealing a large red spot on his stomach.
At first, he said, he was told his body needed oxygen and sent to hour-long sessions in a hyperbaric chamber — where patients breathe 100 percent oxygen to enhance their natural healing processes.

Over the coming days, she felt increasingly worse, and her skin around her stomach area began to blister and die.
After debridement surgery – a procedure to remove dead and damaged tissue – she was fitted with a wound dressing to cover the area and help speed healing.
“I felt like I was dying,” he said. “When I was sick, I was transferred to another hospital and they immediately isolated me. I screamed in pain. An infectious disease specialist came in and tried to calm me down by telling me about his home and family in America talk.
“He told me I had a very serious infection and needed surgery,” she said. “Still I can’t see the road to recovery.”

Her dying flesh was cut open, she underwent three surgeries to prevent infection, and then, on March 29—more than a month after she arrived in Colombia—Franks was allowed to fly home, and she went straight to ‘ another hospital.
Wanting to be close to her family, she flew to Denver, Colorado, where her loved ones organized a team of surgeons to prepare for her arrival.
After examining his wound, doctors confirmed he was infected with three different types of dangerous bacteria – two of which had never been seen before in the United States.
“Doctors believe the bacteria came from contaminated equipment,” he said. “Of course I don’t know for sure, but my opinion is that it came from the clinic because I already had symptoms before I was transferred elsewhere.”

At first it seemed that nothing could save her as the bacteria became resistant to the drug.
“I called it my unicorn juice,” she said. “Luckily it worked and my insurer picked up a lot of the cost, but because it was so expensive and I needed a large dose, I was left with a substantial medical bill of about $10,000.”
Now Franks has set up a GoFundMe page to help transplant her stomach with flesh from her thighs.
He also speaks out to warn others not to take online reviews as gospel, as he believes companies often delete or edit negative reviews.

“When I did extensive research, I didn’t see anything that worried me. I know now that it wasn’t an informed decision – I was simply seeing what someone else wanted me to see,” he said. “But I don’t. want to tell people to do thorough research. I want them to realize that surgery is simply not worth it. You have to learn to love yourself. I wish I did.
“I live in pain every day now, but I’m happy to be alive and I like what I’ve done to help others,” Franks said. “When it happened to me, I didn’t even tell my family what I had done. They thought I was on holiday, so I had to call home very loudly and tell my parents that this might be the last time I talked to them because everything went wrong.”
“I am incredibly grateful to be alive and I really want to inspire other people to love themselves,” she said. “I’ve learned that surgery doesn’t change the way you or anyone else looks. On you. It’s not worth it.”
