Sandown Raceway plays a major role in Australian motor racing history. As the oldest race track in the country, Sandown can also claim the title of selling Australia’s first visitor car, which took place in March 1904. At the time Sandown was used mainly for horse racing but by 1931 the track had been largely abandoned.
The amalgamation of various Victorian grounds in the 1960s meant that there was sufficient capital to purchase and develop Sandown as a modern dual-use facility for horse and motor racing.
To help promote events at the newly created track, Aussie racing legends such as Len Lukey and Neil Marsden founded Sandown Park Motorsport Pty Ltd and from 1961 construction began on Sandown Motorsport Park. Construction was completed the following year, and the horse track soon followed in 1965.
1962 saw a star-studded line-up at Sandown Raceway, with two-time world champion Jack Braham, along with Jim Clark, Rob Flockhart and Chuck Daigh taking on New Zealand champion Pat Hoare.

In the 1960s, racing stars flocked to Sandown Raceway for the first Tasman Series, where the biggest names in racing’s biggest claimed all the trophies.
This was the first years of the development of the golden age of Holden vs Ford, and each event was won by the other manufacturer until 1983. It was also the golden age of Peter Brock, who dominated Sandown between 1973-84. Allan Moffatt was the only competitor to break the winning streak, with Ford winning in 1974 and Mazda in 1982 and ’83.
Unfortunately, the politics of Sandown always attract the Grand Prix. The Victorian State Government would not support the bids, leaving Adelaide open to South Australia.
Instead, the LCCA won another world event, the final round of the 1984 World Endurance Championship for sports cars, making it the first FIA road racing event to be held in Australia.

In late 2007, the circuit’s owner, The Melbourne Racing Club took over local management and secured a long-term contract with V8 Supercars, including a significant financial investment to improve the pits and safety of the circuit.
Since the V8 Supercars series was born in 1997, the Sandown 500 event remained at the track from 1997-1998.
During 1999-2000, Sandown became a racing circuit for the V8 Supercar Championship Series, then expanded to three 150km races including pit stops in 2001 and 2002. He returned to 500km in 2003 and was a major player in the series. , picking up wins from stars like Mark Skaife, Tod Kelly, Marcos Ambrose and Greg Ritter.
In 2012, the event returned to its private 500km roots, as the predecessor to the Bathurst 1000.
