You can take a train from Vancouver to Jasper, Banff and Lake Louise round-trip, but we recommend booking one-way so you have more time to explore. I love getting out of Vancouver, from the hustle and bustle of the city to the tranquility of the Alps.
I give myself a day or two to explore the neighborhoods and things to do in Vancouver before getting on the train. This gives me time to meet all my friends in Vancouver so we can all ride the Rocky Mountaineer train together.

The Ultimate Vancouver To Banff Road Trip Itinerary
You can book your rock climbing trip from Vancouver to Jasper or from Jasper to Vancouver. Plan to spend more time in Jasper, no matter which route you take. Despite its remote location, Jasper has more to do than you might think.
There are three airports you can fly into to get to and from Jasper National Park. Remember where you’ll be arriving and departing by train, so you fly to the right airport on the right dates.
If you’re starting your trip in Vancouver, you’ll want to fly into Vancouver International Airport in Richmond, British Columbia, just outside Vancouver’s city limits.
For those starting or ending their trip in Jasper, you have two options – you can transfer at Calgary International Airport or Edmonton International Airport. Calgary has a lot to offer if you want to extend your trip and stay a little closer, but Edmonton also has plenty to explore if you want to stay an extra day.

Although there aren’t many hotels in Jasper, which is why they sell out so quickly, Jasper offers everything from rustic cabins and small inns to luxury lodges and great hotel amenities. Here are some of our favorite places to book in Jasper National Park.

Jasper National Park has plenty of restaurants to enjoy year-round. The city has gone beyond some of the earlier options and has become a small but mighty place for regional cuisine.
From delicious coffee and pastries to starting the morning with pub grub and fine dining at night, I always know I’m well fed when surrounded by beautiful scenery.
Lake Louise is all about slowing down and taking it easy. Along with Jasper, trains can run from Vancouver to Lake Louise or Lake Louise to Vancouver. It really depends on you.

Lake Louise is only a short drive from Banff, so it’s easy to settle into the quiet town and explore all that Banff and even Jasper have to offer.
Many people know Lake Louise for the excellent marketing of the Alberta Tourism Office and the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Who wouldn’t want to see this stunning lake with historic hotels lining the shore?
If you’re not staying at the Fairmont, you can still access the grounds, enjoy hiking and kayaking along the water, and their incredible winter festival.
I’m not going to lie – Banff is one of my favorite places in the world. You’ll find the hustle and bustle of downtown within about 6 blocks of shops, restaurants, attractions and people watching. Easy to drive to Kananaskis, Kenmore, Lake Louise and Jasper.

Take your time in Banff. Give yourself a few days to hike, but also to explore the city. Even after getting off the train, you’ll be thankful you slowed down a bit.
While I usually tell people to book the Fairmont Canada when it comes to Banff National Park, I prefer to stay in downtown Banff to walk to restaurants and shops. Fairmont Banff Springs is a short walk away when the weather is cold and the bus doesn’t run.
New destinations don’t come along very often on the North American Rocky Mountaineer route, but a trip to Red Rocks is one rock climbing experience I can’t wait to see.
As a state-of-the-art train experience, you can depart from Denver or Moab to spend the night in Glenwood Springs on the new route. Because national parks are often a big draw on Rocky Mountain Railroad routes, America can’t be ignored.

Instead of traveling through the Canadian Rockies, the Red Rocks route brings you incredible views of Rocky Mountain National Park and the American Southwest for a new world-class rail travel experience.
When you travel by train through the Canadian Rockies with Rocky Mountaineer, you will stop at least one night, usually in the small town of Kamloops. This will break up your trip and give you more time to take in the natural beauty on a two-day rail tour of British Columbia and Alberta.

After the 2020 events, Rocky Mountaineer added additional safety measures for all forward-facing trains. Train operations continue to follow United States CDC guidelines as well as Canadian safety guidelines.
Each train car is equipped with a high-level air filtration system that ensures continuous air circulation. Intake and disinfection cycles every 3.5 minutes, removing 99.9% of airborne particles such as bacteria and viruses.
The interior of the rail is thoroughly cleaned using an electrostatic disinfectant sprayer. All train seats and tray tables are cleaned daily before passengers arrive.
