Teachers’ hands are tied in the current situation with the spread of COVID-19. Knowing that schools may be the first places to close, we wait and see what is expected of us. Are schools closed? What happens if my school closes? Should I prepare for visual learning? What if my students do not have access to the Internet or technology? How do I teach when students have limited access to art at home?

These are the questions that have been on your mind for the past few weeks. We don’t have all the answers, but we do know that trying to maintain routines in the art room at home can be a challenge.

The approach to this situation will not be the same. Every art teacher has a unique situation and a different group of students they are trying to reach. With that in mind, as a teacher, you will need to develop ways to plan and facilitate learning in ways that suit your particular situation. To ease the pain of trying to figure out what to teach your students at home, we’ve created a list of ideas to support your plan. As you look at these ideas, keep your students’ circumstances in mind and make adjustments to best serve your students.

Found art is a technique that artists have been exploring for years. Let your students’ creativity run wild with the things around them.

Without clay at home it would not be very easy to simulate what actually happens in a pottery class. Sometimes, you will be lucky, you can send each student home with a pound of clay, but this is not for everyone. Instead, be creative and keep it simple. Here are some ideas to consider.

Hot tip: Use manila folders as backgrounds for each student’s artwork. And using manila folder clips, add a picture of your students to the folder each week.
